The luteal phase of the menstrual cycle lasts for 14 days of the 28-day menstrual cycle.
Our thanks to cp for pointing us to a lengthy BBC piece, What are the ‘luteal uglies’? And how they’re affecting women, inevitably written by a woman, hopefully not in her luteal phase. An extract:
“Elena, who works in hospitality and as an actress in London, says she feels lethargic and “completely unmotivated” during her luteal phase.
“I feel like my brain is working in slow motion, I tend to become clumsy and way more forgetful,” she says.”
Presumably Elena is unable to work as an “actress” during her luteal phase, because she’d forget many of her lines and stage instructions, being “way more forgetful”?”
I’m surprised the article makes no mention of the “brain fog” problem which is apparently confined to women.
So women would be unable to work as actresses during their luteal phases, but what about other professions? Would you want a female brain surgeon operating with a scalpel on your child’s brain, to be “clumsy and way more forgetful”? Clearly not.
The measure(s) to deal with the luteal phase issue would clearly have to vary by profession. Brain surgeons, pilots, politicians etc. would be forbidden from working during the phase, and their salaries cut accordingly. Women working in hospitality could have their salaries cut by 20% in recognition of their reduced productivity and annoyance caused to customers e.g. by bringing them the wrong food or drinks. Other professions would be treated on a case-by-case basis, a perfectly rational solution to this pressing problem.
