1. Janice Fiamengo makes sharp observations on the response to this “tragedy”. It put me in mind of the great and the good in this country who can’t seem to imagine that an attractive young nurse could be a baby killer. In the past couple of days I read two reports with similar but more subtle “gamma bias”. One about the atrocities committed in Srebrenica. Noting that the “genocide” was of men and boys the report then spent rather more column inches on the rape, forced marches and spitting up of mothers from daughters. By coincidence another was about Rwanda. In it the “genocide” and subsequent wars made the country “the country of widows” as well over 75% of those slaughtered were boys and men. And Rwanda became something like the feminists dream (10% of the population male) with 70% of the population female. And again having stated the toll of death visited on males the piece has to spend more column inches on rapes, forced marriages, child brides forced domestic service visited on the females. Though not quite the “women are the main victims of war” of Mrs. Clinton but a subtle shift to engage the readers sympathies for females.

   By the way for many years Rwanda topped one of those UN “indices” of gender equality, ahead of the usual winners the Scandinavians. It seems a country of widows with less than a third of its adult population men has to use women in all sorts of roles. The fact that its dirt poor, ruled by a military backed president (whose last election result was he got an in credible 98% of the vote) less important than its toothless legislature has lots of women in it.
