Robert Kenyon to stand for Reform UK in the Makerfield by-election

Interesting. We wish Robery Kenyon well on June 18. He’s a local man, a self-employed plumber – Farage has already dubbed him “The Plucky Plumber” – who stood for Reform UK at the last general election and acquitted himself well, coming second behind Labour that time.

  1. I noticed that a British Tarot card reader on YT has read the cards for Andy Burnham. I checked out what she had to say. The message she got from the cards was that Andy Burnham is too hot headed, and has no tactical sense. That could count against him. If she’s right, Robert Kenyon may have a chance of winning this.

  2. Two observations; First: local labour councillors (Manchester) seem convinced only “Andy” can save their seats and prevent a collapse in MPs. in the next national election. Which seems a good idea for Reform and Conservatives to be Machiavellian (last election their combined vote was close to the Labour vote). I doubt Andy is the superman they believe but a failure at this point would crush Labour’s morale.

Second it is almost comical that the most salient issue both sides of the Pennines up here, and the issue Reform is identified closely with, barely gets a mention. Immigration of course and the slide into ghettos, clans and “sectarian politics”. The Parliamentary by election in Gorton and Denton exemplified this with Gorton (which has been “transformed” in the space of a decade voting Green and Denton (still “horribly white”) voting Reform. The Greens literature in foreign languages symbolises much that is true across the region with Greens and “Independents” running on Gaza and immigration issues. Were labour serious about turning around their fortunes in the “red wall” running through Lancashire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and Gt Manchester and reaching the West Midlands they’d have something to say about the divisions, religious intolerance and rampant anti Semitism and blatant favouritism that blights Cities, Boroughs and towns across the “wall”. Now so clear that the areas that have escaped this sort of “diversity” can see their future, the political and social chaos and sectarianism that blights, Oldham, Bradford, Blackburn and on and on. The solidly Labour voters of Denton didn’t switch to Reform because they think Nigel is a socialist! While the Labour elite refuse to even acknowledge this is one of the most salient issues. Whoever is leader will make little headway until they do….. and there appear no signs of that.

Lets be honest few voters voting for Reform are doing so because of their economics policy. They do so because it remains the one that listens and then says it like it is. I suppose its like the “surprise” that there was a vote for Brexit. When all the while the largest Party from the UK in the EU Parliament was Farage’s, where PR meant the votes better reflected the people’s mood. The irony.

    • Well of course we had one already during the coalition! Meanwhile the sort of story that seems rarely to get into national news but that keep coming in local news here in the Red Wall Rape gang sentenced to nearly 300 years in prison after 20 carried out ‘truly appalling’ abuse of vulnerable girls To be fair to “Andy” he did do an investigation into the Social Care role in this. I think the most accurate report on Labour pointed out that for the race to No. 10 the electorate is Labour MPs. So no doubt Andy will be campaigning to them as much as to Wiganers. There is a mood here that as a “local lad” and popular as regional Mayor he’s pretty much certain to get in. He’s busy playing up “local hero” salt of the earth round here. But no doubt aiming messages to his faction in the PLP. I don’t suppose “the right” will be Machiavellian and our Andy will be on the way to Westminster soon.

  3. And from the perennially left leaning MEN The uncomfortable truth behind Greater Manchester’s local election results – Manchester Evening News With all the very real problems (including violence touched on here in Oldham and anti Semitism in Manchester) it is as usual a problem “where are the wimmin?”. Despite all the actual evidence that male Politian’s are the most abused, for the obvious cultural reason that we are more protective of women (“never hit a girl” “mind your language in front of women”) and both sexes think men can “man up”. One theory is women are put off by “misogyny”, having to actually turn up to Council meetings, comments on “Tick tock” (why does no one just turn it off or turn on filters?) the “pay gap”, people disagreeing (surely that is the point of different Parties and having votes). In fact the usual litany.

Of course two things never intrude on this whine fest. Given all the data on risk taking it should be no surprise that the insurgent Parties have more males taking the big risk, unlike previously they aren’t slipped into safe seats by their friends in the Labour Party but are taking a big leap into something new. And in the case of Reform doing so in the face of a massive political elite campaign even including the Police that brands them “Nazis” “Fascists” etc. Candidates need “Balls”.

The second thing is of course the already well researched big drift of young women in particular towards wokery. Seems logical that as men are more likely to be socially conservative and patriotic they’d be candidates for such a Party as well as more likely to vote for it!

And lets be honest Politics at every level was a much rougher business indeed until the affluent end of the last Century. Politicians never address big public meetings, pound the streets have unscripted public debate even deal with angry constituents. It probably is a bit of a shock to be facing the end of the comfy safe world of the Blairite “uni-party”and actual real passionate politics.
