Good news. Fury as women hit by pension age rise denied payouts.

At last, some good news from the government. The demand for “compensation” from the WASPI (“Women Against State Pension Inequality”) women was always ludicrous as well as ironic, given that what they were protesting was the introduction (and implications) of state pension equality. A stronger case could be made for men to receive compensation after having had to wait five more years than women for their state pensions – at 65 rather than 60 – and despite men collectively paying around three times as much income tax as women.

  1. What is always left out of this is the fact that the 1995 act followed on from the UK losing it’s case in both domestic and European courts. The rulings declared the different ages direct sex discrimination. The first fruits of this were that men became able to access government funded concessions at 60, the same age as women had been able to get bus passes etc. The courts ruled the scale of the discrimination was so great that the Gov. had to be given time to phase in full equality. Of course it didn’t phase in earlier retirement for men( like in France). Which of course meant for a couple of decades men were directly discriminated against until the pension age was equalised. Morally it is men who continued to be directly discriminated against following the Court ruling in the early 90s ! Though as usual they didn’t protest this demanding faster harmonisation.
