Earlier today I posted a piece titled Court Without a Lawyer. One of the directors of that organisation is Ray Barry, who I had the pleasure of working with when we both stood for J4MB in the 2015 general election. He has emailed me to inform me about the Society of Professional McKenzie Friends.

McKenzie Friends help fathers facing problems of access to their children (and related problems) following relationship breakdowns. Ray has been one for many years, and is very highly regarded in that capacity. They aren’t legal people, but well-informed and well-meaning people who usually charge significantly less than solicitors and (I hear) usually perform far better, and achieve more for fathers. Ray wrote to me:

“John Ison and myself set up this Trade Association some time ago for Professional McKenzie Friends: Society of Professional McKenzie Friends Ltd. (SPMF). Contact details of all our members are listed on that site, here. We ensure they are competent, adhere to professional standards, carry professional indemnity insurance, and are subject to our complaints procedure. 

We did this in light of a number of “cowboys” ripping off vulnerable parents, and there being no statutory regulation of McKenzie Friends. Sadly, we still get complaints from parents, after the event,  about Mackenzie Friends who are not members of SPMF, who have taken a parent’s money, and given bad advice, or no advice at all.”
