Nobottle, Silverstone, Pratz

In a similar vein to the last piece, and this time with literally no connection to men’s issues, I once had a friend take a photograph of a wonderful Welsh friend, Christine – sadly no longer with us – and myself standing with empty wine glasses and forlorn expressions by the sign before the Northamptonshire hamlet of Nobottle. Around the same time I took photos of my children – then maybe 9 or 10 years old, in the mid 1990s – by the sign before the village of Silverstone, also in Northamptonshire. Next to it was a sign with the message, “Please drive carefully”. The Silversone Circuit is the home of the British Grand Prix.
In my internationally bestselling French travelogue Two Men in a Car: A Businessman, a Chauffeur, and Their Holidays in France (2008) the last photo in the plate section is of my chauffeur and myself standing next to the sign for a commune in the Jura Mountains – Pratz. The paperback edition of the book is no longer in print, but second-hand copies occasionally come up for sale. On Amazon it’s here, a steal at just £38.89. The Kindle edition is £5.94, it’s also available to buy for all other e-readers.

Theft of Northamptonshire village Bell End sign 'pathetic'

Enjoy. An extract:

Resident Christine Thurland, 80, said: “I don’t understand why would anyone want to do something so silly.”
She said it was “pathetic” the sign had been stolen.

Only the BBC could ask an 80-year-old woman to comment on the theft of a “Bell End” road sign.
In 2004 I was married to my second ill-fated wife (as opposed to my ill-fated second wife, you understand). On a trip to the Orkneys I asked her to take a photograph of me standing next to a road sign with an arrow pointing towards the village of Twatt. She was, I recall to this day, uncharacteristically keen on complying with my request. The sign was the one shown in the photograph in the top right-hand corner of the Wikipedia page on the village, here.

PEPFAR document exposes knowledge of years of botched circumcisions

A tip of the hat to Douglas for this.

Kirsty Bearfield, 24, threw her own 13kg BABY at a policewoman and left the officer with life-changing injuries. Suspended sentence.

Our thanks to Mike P for this. The woman’s lawyer pleaded mitigating circumstances which it would have been futile to plead if it had been the woman’s partner who committed the crime. The end of the piece:

The judge told Bearfield: ‘I have decided it would not be right or conscionable for something you did two years ago to immediately deprive you of your liberty.’ [J4MB: This begs the obvious question, “WHY have you decided that?”]
Bearfield was sentenced to 12 months in jail, suspended for 18 months, and must have up to 25 days rehabilitation.

Elizabeth Tomkins, 51, bit her partner's scrotum, stabbed him in the face with a broken glass, hit him with an iron, and force-fed him chlorine. Suspended sentence.

Our thanks to HEqual for this. The alcohol was to blame, not the woman, because vagina.

Jeff Leeson – an outstanding Canadian comedian

Not many people know that my favourite form of relaxation is comedy, particularly stand-up comedy. I subscribe to Netflix – about £8.50 per month – almost solely because of their comedy offering, notably their stand-up specials. I admire the Canadian comedienne Katherine Ryan, who’s based in the UK, although I admire her less over time because ever more of her material is feminist in nature and therefore man-hating and about as funny as major dental work without the relief of local anaesthetic.
I’ve subscribed to Amazon Prime for some years – about the same price as Netflix, plus I get stuff delivered at no extra cost, sometimes later the same day. Because I decided to take the evening off for once, I’ve just checked out Amazon’s comedy offering for the first time.
… and I was so pleased I did. After a bit of searching I decided to watch an Amazon special of Jeff Leeson, a Canadian comedian, perform at a venue in London… er… London, Canada. It’s titled, Grandma Used to Heckle Me. I’ve never seen a comedian better at interacting with an audience. Catch it if you can, even if you have to subscribe to Amazon Prime for a month, then cancelling it. If you don’t subscribe to Amazon Prime, then enjoy this trailer (video, 4:37). I can’t recall ever seeing a stand-up comedian introduced by his own mother. Her reaction at the end of his gig is priceless. (4:07 in the trailer).

Men are good.
Men are funny.
