[Note added 27.1.15: We thank Herbert Purdy for his excellent translation of the El Pais article, scroll down to read the content, in his comment.]

We’re used to this blog getting a high number of hits from around the world, but today we’ve had an unusually large number from Spain. Most are traceable to an article in Madrid-based El Pais, the highest circulation daily newspaper in Spain. The article is here.

  1. ooh we got be very careful now… because you are far right wing !!!
this coming from the country of franco !!

cue erin with a few mein kampf jokes( she might be able to get a laugh out of it… at herself).

if that is a true translation.. then it really is a crap article because it says well… nothing.
yes we can see the issue with awards and the people they are awarded to , but the manifesto?

you are regarded as far right??, there is some poor grasp of european politics going on here

i would take it that the fem movement is so desperate to be taken seriously that they asked their “sisters ” in another country to write about it simply because of the reaction against them in the media by the public to the point that their “safe space” and moderation can’t shield them from it.

having tried to demonise you ( to which the public just yawned), they are now trying to be dismissive and claiming failed humour. does the spanish media journalists really have worse integrity than the guardian !

  2. Try this:

Headline: ‘Your utopia is our nightmare: so thinks the English anti-feminist party J4M&B led by former businessman Mike Buchanan whose electoral platform is based on four centuries of cultural decline.’

‘In the evocative novel The Handmaid’s Tale, the great Margaret Atwood plunged us back to 1985 (long before the proliferation of dystopias of all colours and skins) to a world ruled by a theocratic-military dictatorship, where all social rights have been suspended and the State has obliged citizens to comply with the basic morals and ethics of the Old Testament. In this nightmare universe, the highest social level to which women can aspire is to be wives, wearing a blue toga, like the Virgin Mary. At the end of a rigid hierarchy are maids, fertile women whose sole role is to give birth to children for infertile wives. Of course, in this fiction, invented by this Canadian author, it is prohibited for women to read. If you go to the J4MB (web)page you will see the manifesto of this new ultra right political party which is a material realisation of the prophetic imagination of the renowned Canadian authoress.

This new party (which) will run three candidates in the Nottingham area in the upcoming elections, proposes to annul the Equality Act 2010 (an anti-discrimination law on the grounds of gender race and/or religion existing in the British constitution), prevent access of women to leadership positions, prohibit abortion and assisted fertilisation for lesbians and single mothers, and promote differentiated schooling for boys and girls amongst other initiatives that seek to roll back two centuries of social struggle, and, it is clear, not just feminists. However, not all dystopian science fiction fantasies plan for Mike Buchanan, a former conservative businessman, author of books like Feminism: The Ugly Truth, and leader of J4MB. Also, there is room for irony, like the creation of the award ‘lying feminist of the month’ given to feminist personalities (like Roz Hardie the CEO of the organisation Object that fights against the sexual objectification of women in the media and in popular culture, or the Labour MP Gloria de Piero for her comments on the wage gap between men and women.) But that is not all. Also you have special recognition of ‘feminist lifetime Harpie achievement’ awarded to Germaine Greer, authoress of The Female Eunuch, which along with The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir, is considered one of the most influential feminist texts of the second half of the twentieth century.

Perhaps more concerning than these failed attempts at humour (the truth is that no journalist or politician will be moved by a photo with a clown nose, as affirmed in this interview with Roz Hrdie) is its relativistic attitude to issues such as domestic violence, sexual abuse or genital mutilation which is chilling. Can these people really get seats in the British Parliament? Does this ideology extend to the rest of Europe? (Perhaps ‘Is this thinking widespread in Europe?’ would be a better translation) Is it becoming fashionable for ‘Boys to the front’, a perversion of the appeal of the legendary concert called Bikini Kill among the reactionary right and European conservatives?’

  3. So far, it really is like Gandhi said:

‘First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win.’

And we know J4MB and other men’s rights parties will win.

  4. Thanks for this, it gives us the gist. I love the idea that we present ‘Lying Feminist of the Month’ awards as ‘irony’ haha! On a serious note, our narratives on men being the subject of domestic violence and sexual abuse at the hands of women, and very young males (some 8 days old) having their genitals mutilated, ’causes chills’? Germaine Greer (and Harriet Harman) both won Harpy Lifetime Achievement awards.

It would still be good to have a non-Google translation, though, if anyone is up to it.

  5. His Utopia is Our Nightmare, so thinks the English anti-Feminist Party

4m & B party led by former businessman Mike Buchanan bases its electoral platform on a cultural decline of four centuries. And it’s not kidding.

In the evocative novel The Handmaid’s Tale , the great Margaret Atwood plunged us back in 1985 (long before the current proliferation of dystopias of all colors and coat) in a world ruled by a theocratic-military dictatorship where all social rights have been suspended, and the state has forced citizens to fulfill the moral and ethical foundations of the Old Testament. In this world of nightmare, the highest social rank to which women can aspire is to be wives and wearing a blue toga, like the Virgin Mary. At the end of a rigid hierarchy, are the maids, fertile women whose only role is to bear children for infertile wives. Of course, in this fiction invented by Canadian author, women are forbidden to read. If you go to the page J4m & B , you can learn the manifesto of this new political right-wing coalition, which parere[sic] [provides?] a physical realization of the subtle allegory by the prophetic imagination of renowned Canadian author. This new party, which will run three candidates in the region of Nottingham in the upcoming elections, proposes to annul the Equality Act 2010 (an anti-discrimination law on the grounds of gender, race and / or religion existing in today’s British constitution), prevent access of women to leadership positions, prohibit abortion and assisted fertilization for lesbians and single mothers, and promote differentiated schooling for children among other initiatives that seek to roll back two centuries of social struggles, not only feminists’. However, it’s not all dystopian science fiction fantasies for Mike Buchanan, a former conservative businessman, author of books like Feminism: The Ugly Truth , and leader of J4m & B. There is also room for irony, as the creation of the award to ” the lying feminist of the month “assigned to different personalities (as Roz Hardie, the CEO of the organization Object, dedicated to combating the sexual objectification of women in the media and culture popular, or the Labour MP Gloria De Piero for her comments on the wage gap between men and women). But that’s not all. It also has a special recognition to “feminist harpy with more experience” awarded to Germaine Greer, author of The female eunuch , who along with The Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir, can be considered one of the most influential writers of feminism in the second half of the twentieth century. Perhaps more worrisome than these failed attempts at humor (the truth is that no journalist or political will budge you picture taken with a clown nose, as stated in this interview Roz Hardie) is your attitude towards issues such as domestic violence, sexual abuse or genital mutilation which causes chills. Can these people really get seats in the British Parliament? Does your ideology is extended to the rest of Europe? Is it becoming fashionable this “Boys To The Front”, the perversion of that legendary concert called Bikini Kill, among the reactionary right and European conservative?

(translated mostly using Google translate, I’ve filled in the gaps where it can’t quite grasp grammatical differences)
