I’m old enough to remember PIE and it’s campaigning. There were marches, hard to credit now. They were indeed taken up by the left and particularly feminists who wanted to “deconstruct” gender roles and “the family”. Hewitt and Harman were prominent in supporting this deconstruction, their main target being the “patriarchal” male breadwinner. Of course they were the tip of the iceberg in terms of the movement that colonised public policy and drove the idea that there should be a sort of enforced meltdown of society which would alow a totally new society to emerge. To an extent the deconstruction has succeeded, in creating the social chaos most acutely felt by poorer communities and young men and many fathers. Of course the “eternal classless society” that Hewitt Harman et al longed for is just a fantasy. I’ve no wonder they will deny this link now. Perhaps the measure of their success is that a simple symbolic tax concession to family , common in European states often lauded by the left, is so difficult to implement.
