BBC’s ludicrous defence of its self-serving complaints system

An interesting piece by David Keighley for TCW. An extract:

“A BBC spokesman quoted in a Daily Telegraph article about the News-watch survey said: ‘The BBC has one of the most open and comprehensive systems for handling complaints in the UK media, regulated by a fully independent regulator in Ofcom, which in its most recent major research project found very high levels of satisfaction in our system. The vast majority of complaints are addressed and resolved at Stage 1 of the process, with only a small portion progressing to the Executive Complaints Unit for further consideration, so no meaningful comparison can be drawn from outcomes between the two stages. The ECU uphold complaints where they consider there to have been a breach of editorial standards.’

Both strands of that defence are disingenuous, outrageous tosh.”

In 2014 – 12 years ago – we published Our first official complaint to the BBC – a Newsnight episode on domestic abuse/violence breaches 50+ BBC Editorial Guidelines. Our complaint was rejected without explanation, our appeal likewise. We haven’t wasted our time submitting a formal complaint to the BBC since.

  1. Years ago now my mother, brought up as a believer in the BBC (always very reluctant to let me and my brother to watch ITV). “Gave up” on the TV and Radio BBC feedback programmes because “the BBC is never wrong” Either there is a read out statement about how wrong the complaint is or “an Editor comes on solely to say how right he or she is”. As she said you’d think just to have credibility they’d admit the odd mistake.

  2. For anyone needing a positive view. Always demonstrating the best of ordinary masculinity I suggest the re-runs on minor channels of the DIY SOS series. BBC commissioned that somehow has evaded the Woke police. In every episode from small house to “big build” Each shows positive masculinity. Never mentioned but obvious 90% of the work is done by men, most volunteering their times and skills. Often battling weather, unexpected problems and tight deadlines. Frequently working into the night. In each there are some opportunities to hear the volunteers motivations. Typical “banter” is on display as is typical male humour at each other’s expense (which would be micro aggressions etc. if women involved) as well as empathy and sympathy for the beneficiaries of their efforts. Stoicism, commitment, skill, grit, problem solving as well as responding to empathy/sympathy through action rather than platitudes. Somehow it slipped through the BBC thought police in showing men at their best. A part of me wonders if it did that by being full of just the sort of men the feminist mafia think are beneath them, being obsessed with CEOs and Offices.
