A retired friend has decided to emigrate permanently. He says that after 14 years of suffering from Conservative Party incompetence, he just can’t take five years of even worse Labour Party incompetence with its inevitable expansion of identity politics and further assaults on the human rights of men and boys.
He’s asked a friend to sell his car after he’s emigrated, and in relation to this he’s going to park his car on the friend’s land on the day of his flight. In connection with this he’s submitted a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) to the DVLA in Swansea, using form V890:
He pointed me to the right-hand column of the guidance notes, which has this:
“Once you have made a SORN you will be sent an acknowledgement within 4 weeks confirming the details. If the acknowledgement is not received after 4 weeks you must contact Customer Enquiries on 0300 790 6802 immediately, as you could still be liable for the vehicle and may receive a penalty.”
My friend writes:
“The DVLA is infamous for its inefficiency – even by the public sector’s low standards – and I’m told by a friend who works there that well over 90% of the staff are women. I am now required to compensate for these women’s laziness / incompetence, otherwise suffer the consequences i.e. a penalty. I’m counting the days until my flight!”
I recently renewed my drivers licence online and it was achieved in just a few days rather than the declared 2 or 4 weeks. Maybe because it was a mostly automated system, compared to the other duties like SORN.
My condolesences to your friend who has decided to leave the UK( I wish him all the best) and to his concern about the DVLA and indeed many public sector organisations that appear to be little more than daycare centres for the meritless.
but still they plow on with mantra of DEI and quotas so long as someone else is paying the price.
as for the labour party the rest of us will have to resist as much as possible the continued incompetence of uniparties poilticans.
I was fortunate that last time labour went into power I spent majority of it living abroad( although I came back every year to watch the rot set in, especially in london and my friends and family suffer).
I don’t have that luxury anymore., so I will have to grin and bear it. I don’t know if I can hang on another 5 years in the hope of a reformed family court( thanks for nothing conservatives/labour ) so that I can get justice for DV i was subjected to…

The DVLA really grinds my gears: my car’s an old 1.6L hatchback
— yet my road tax this year is nearly four hundred quid!
“I’m told by a friend who works there that well over 90% of the staff are women.”
I imagine the same is true in much of the public sector, now.
They “liberated” women from their role as home-makers, and so they had to find them jobs somewhere. Hence the make-work non-jobs which vast numbers of them now occupy. …And for which we have to pay.
No wonder we’re taxed into oblivion.

Nearly £400? Wow! I have a 2013 Honda Civic diesel and my road tax is £0.

In effect, my car pays the road tax for your car.
I think that my car must be male and yours female…
