Some years ago, I posted a piece following the death of Malcolm, my wonderful Scottish father. A few hours ago I was present when my equally wonderful French-Canadian mother, Claire Marie-Ange Buchanan, 95, breathed her last. I am closing the office for a number of days.
Very sorry Mike. You know me and the guys are here.

Mike, please accept my deepest sympathy and condolences upon the loss of your dear mother!! I am so very sorry to hear of her passing. Given what a fine, resolute, strong, dedicated and brave man that you are it’s easy to surmise that you came from two truly wonderful and exemplary parents. You are such a great guy, Mike! My consolations on the passing of your mother. She reached the same age (95) my mother reached. There is no greater feeling of solitude. Again, my consolations.

Thanks Steve, she was. She lived in England for the last 30+ years of her life, but to the end, whenever she referred to “we”, she meant Canadians!
