what crap she writes MikeI couldn’t put it better. Burchill (64) always strikes me as a teenager determined never to grow up.

“I’ve loathed sports of all kinds from girlhood, yet all last week I was walking on air because of the Lionesses”. Does rather sum it up. The Lionesses “support” is largely manufactured by media. It’s very easy to conjure support for a team when it’s on the up. The real test is support when the competition is stiff and there are fallow years. Not a football fan myself I can see that “Womens football” in this country is basically some exhibition teams fielded by some Premier League clubs and the national team. There is little substance to it. If they aren’t winning the hyperbole starts to wear thin and the likes of Burchill will go back to ignoring sport or occassionally demand that Male sports fans show more interest in womens sport.
One got a glimpse of the small pool of talent by the number of team members who had or have a relationship with members of the their team or ones from another nation. Of course the other oddity was the number of lesbians in the teams. Interesting because for my adult life the search has been on for “gay” major league players, with as far as I know only a handful in all that 40 years.
I do however agree with Burchill on the merits of stoicism and the role many sports have in teaching resilience in the face of the ups and downs of life.
