I was 17 when I saw an amazing series of acts in a sold-out Wembley Stadium – 21 June, 1975, 48 years ago. The acts, in chronological order:
- Stackridge
- Rufus feat. Chaka Khan
- Joe Walsh
- The Eagles (Joe Walsh joined the band not long after)
- The Beach Boys
- Elton John
Just four days ago an interesting article on the event was published, California Stealin’: Beach Boys Conquer Elton John’s Wembley Extravaganza. On a glorious summer’s day, the Beach Boys went down a storm.
Elton John was the headlining act and we wondered how he might follow them. In the event he triumphed, despite performing the whole of his new album Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. If memory serves me right after 48 years, he finished with a barnstorming Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting.
Elton is the headline act at Glastonbury and appears later this evening, BBC iPlayer link here. You’ll need a BBC licence to watch it, sorry!
