Our thanks to Nigel for this. He writes:
Seeing Dr. Warren Farrell, in interview, coincided with catching this BBC article. Part of a series of interviews of CEOs and – as one would expect from the BBC – a lot of them are women. Anyway this week’s was one such female CEO who has decided “perfectionism” is a female trait and gets in the way of success. Why did I connect it with Dr. Farrell? Well he wrote a book about the behaviours and traits of successful people and suggested women might want to learn them if they wanted to be big earners.
Now of course you might be thinking being perfect at work may be a recipe for success. But in fact it’s not really what it’s about, it’s our old friends risk, anxiety and confidence.
“As a female entrepreneur [or business leader] you can be too afraid of failure. We need to learn to push ourselves out of our comfort zone and embrace risk more.”
Of course Anna Brailsford’s company makes money training women to have such traits. She complains she had no “role models” herself, then proceeds to tell us how her own mother, a single mother, was a businesswoman; well, THERE was one role model!
And what magic do males have that means they aren’t held back by being “perfectionist” ?
“I used to compare myself a lot to my older brother growing up. If he failed it wouldn’t bother him, he would just dust himself off, get up and try again.”
What a revelation! The evil patriarchy oppresses women by just getting on with stuff, if men fail they dust themselves off, get up and try again. Not hard, you’d think, and something her brother learned without special consultancy and training, extra help or “positive action”. Surely it can’t be that simple. I think Dr. Farrell would say it is.
