Monogamous Marriage Isn’t A Product Of The Patriarchy, It’s A Guard Against It

A well written and thought-provoking article by S. G. Cheah has recently been published on the site Evie, which I would like to respond to.

Many people who have bought into the feminist notions about matrimony like to argue against marriage by saying that it’s “just a piece of paper.”

But if you were to follow that line of logic, then the American Constitution is also “just a piece of paper.” The truth, however, is that marriage (like the American Constitution) is a powerful institution enacted to protect our rights as women. Despite what we’re told by feminist propaganda, marriage isn’t a form of oppression by the patriarchy. Rather, marriage is a stalwart triumph for womankind.”

Cheah is absolutely right in her estimation of marriage being a “stalwart triumph for womankind”. Gynocentric marriages, which are all too common, centre the needs and wants of wives, with husbands, all too often, reduced to playing a functional rather than fulfilling role and obtaining his sense of identity from his wife’s approval of his acceptable servitude.

Feminist theory argues that marriage forces the woman into a subservient role to her husband. This is a myth. The fact is, monogamous marriage protects women from being treated as sex objects. In the sexual marketplace, men’s interest normally gravitates towards short-term sexual relationships, whereas women tend to gravitate towards long-term partnerships. This should not come as a surprise. Due to the biological reality of how humans are built, when it comes to sex, the stakes are higher for women than they are for men. The saying “nine minutes for him could mean nine months for her” comes to mind. With the institution of monogamous marriage, a man is legally bound to provide for his one wife and their biological children. Are we really supposed to believe that this is a form of patriarchal oppression?”

There is more truth in this statement – surveys repeatedly show that a majority of women do not find casual sex to be satisfying, and this fact should be commonly acknowledged to help women make good choices for themselves. It should also be acknowledged that a minority of women do in fact find casual sex to be satisfying and they can safely be celebrated too, as they traditionally have been, in art and literature. The worn phrase Cheah repeats “nine minutes for him could mean nine months for her” is an archaic cliché that is no longer relevant with the myriad of reliable contraceptives available for women. A more relevant phrase may be “nine minutes for him could mean 18 years of child support” because, in the sexual marketplace, I believe it to be men who are more significantly at risk from pregnancies they haven’t planned on (because women do have so many options for controlling their fertility that men do not share).

To help you think about this, imagine how different the life of Fantine (from Les Miserables) would have been had she been married to Cosette’s father. The good-for-nothing cad would have been held responsible for ensuring the well-being of his daughter Cosette, saving Fantine from her downfall into prostitution, illness, and death.

Monogamous marriage not only preserves the well-being of children, but it also strongly protects female dignity.”

Female dignity is a glorious thing to behold but I reject the idea that only monogamous married women can exemplify the value. Further, a significant proportion of monogamous wives may not actually exemplify dignity at all – abusive women, self-centred women, bossy women… Can be as monogamous and married as they like and still potentially lack dignity.

Marriage is correlated with better outcomes for children – but it’s not clear to me that the key is the “piece of paper”. Marriage is also correlated with religiosity, and I believe that faithful communities make particularly dedicated families. Separated families, on the other hand, far too often include children without meaningful access to their fathers in modern Western societies.

Societies that don’t have a culture of strong monogamous marriage have several deep-seated issues. In my previous article against polygamy, I cite one of the largest studies on polygamy that shows how in a society where there’s a large portion of men who don’t get to be paired up in marriage, you’ll end up with higher rates of violence, suicide, and social unrest as a result.

A society with a large portion of unmarried men will end up with higher rates of violence and social unrest.

Monogamous marriage significantly reduces the major social problems of polygamist cultures. As the study stated, “In cultures that permit men to take multiple wives, the intra-sexual competition that occurs causes greater levels of crime, violence, poverty, and gender inequality than in societies that institutionalize and practice monogamous marriage.”

To give you an idea, we can see this playing out in the Middle East where polygamy is legal and common. Not only does a polygamous society lead to the subjugation of women, but it also throws off marriage rates for a large portion of single males, which, in turn, leads to a litany of social ills. Hordes of young men who don’t see a future for themselves (as they won’t be able to find wives to form a family of their own) will be seduced by radical ideas to join groups like ISIS where they’re promised access to conquered enemy women who’ll act as sex slaves. We can also observe a version of this problem here in the West today brought on by hookup culture/casual sex promoted by the feminist “sexual liberation” movement for women. In practice, because women decide who their sexual partners will be, only the very few good-looking men will gain access to multiple sexual partners, while a whole cohort of men who aren’t as sexually attractive will have problems finding a sexual partner.”

This is a convincing argument against polygamy – but it strikes me as a stretch to conflate polygamous Middle-Eastern countries with the modern West.

This outrageously offensive conflation suggests to me that Cheah is utterly blind to the experiences of men and boys. MGTOW and incel communities are providing vitally important male-space for men and boys who may have some degree of dejection and bitterness but can find social support and places to speak freely and maybe even some good advice for personal growth and/or preservation within them.

While the feminist movement has empowered women to act with “sexual freedom”, the flipside of that coin is how they have also empowered men to act like philanderers. With the goal of marriage is now on the backburner, men can primarily look at the women they’re interested in not as the potential love of his life and the mother of his children, but rather if she is willing to sleep with him.

And the harsh reality is, as I’ve touched on in my other articles about promiscuity and prostitution, as sex has become cheap, women become more replaceable to men. A wife, on the other hand, is not interchangeable to her husband, which is why she is called “his significant other.” And to attain a man’s fidelity, whereby a woman becomes a significant part of a man’s life, she attains this power mostly from marriage.”

It’s fair to say that monogamous marriage confers power for women. I think it’s time that long term relationships conferred equal power on the women and men involved.

Caitlin Moran generously deigns to include men in her new feminism

Caitlin Moran told The Metro, last Thursday, that:

I’m wary of people saying men can’t talk about feminism, but what would be useful is if men used feminism to talk about the problems for men, rather than the problems for women. When I wrote [How to be a Woman], I knew no-one had explained feminism in a way that made it just seem what it is, which is something that allows you to be more joyous, to understand the world and yourself more.”

And

There are gender presumptions that make men’s lives difficult and men have never had a revolution where they talk about what it means to be a man. ‘I say, come and join us in our fabulous futurist utopia where we talk about what we want to be, rather than what we’re supposed to be.”

And if that statement honestly represented feminism, I’d be pro-feminist (at least) – but readers of this blog will know that feminist lobbying is consistently in the direction of female privilege (aka male disadvantage).

LARPing – latest threat to women

The Up Helly Aa festival in Shetland sees men dressed as Vikings marching through the streets before setting fire to a replica longship while women participants prepare food and organise parties. After complaints of groping surfaced from a number of women, the Scottish National Party’s, Maree Todd has called for a radical reformation of the event, in line with modern egalitarian principles.

Maree said:

It is deeply distressing to read the accounts of sexual abuse and harassment at the Up Helly Aa festival. We know that violence against women is made possible by the gender-stereotyped world we live in.

Decision-makers in Shetland should not underestimate their responsibility to implement change and ensure this does not continue to be a longstanding consequence of the festival.

The safety of women and girls must be prioritised in all future decisions relating to Up Helly Aa.”

Ms Todd claimed that change was overdue, adding:

It is essential that Up Helly Aa committees across Shetland, and the Shetland Islands council address and reflect on their role here.

Just last year the council backed the Lerwick Up Helly Aa committee’s continued exclusion of women in squads, ruling that the decision was in line with the Equality Act 2010. This is unacceptable — the goal should always be to eliminate gender inequality, not perpetuate it.”

Alistair Carmichael, the MP for the Orkney & Shetland and former Scottish secretary, was also alarmed by the accounts. He said:

I have attended a lot of Up Helly Aa celebrations over the years and in my experience they have always been great community occasions where people of all ages and backgrounds have come together to celebrate.

It runs completely contrary to the spirit of that for anyone to be made to feel unsafe or to have to exclude themselves from the festivities because they feel unsafe. It is unacceptable for any person to have a sense of ‘sexual entitlement’ on Up Helly Aa night or any other night.”

Sally Huband, an author and Shetland resident, raised the concerns in her essay Northern Raven. She wrote:

I know of some women who have stopped going to the halls for the evening entertainment as they are tired of being sexually harassed.

A women told me her vagina was grabbed without her consent during the festival. One account of a more serious sexual assault made me feel sick to my stomach. It is clear that some men equate the Lerwick Up Helly Aa with a night of sexual entitlement.”

Another resident said:

Every single Up Helly Aa I get touched by men.”

Shetland Islands council denied supporting the exclusion of women from the Lerwick event. A spokeswoman said:

The council cannot dictate to an organisation that it must change its membership criteria. The council is committed to gender equality and is proactively focused on creating a gender-positive employment culture with zero-tolerance towards the perpetrators of violence against women.”

J4MB, of course, condemns any sexual assaults – but we also condemn hysterical responses to unconfirmed allegations of sexual assault. We also notice that Live Action Role Playing (LARPing) is a majority-male space (with healthy female minorities that suggests it’s not an unwelcoming community), and question whether all this fuss is just more feminist aggression against something that men like.

Bad news for Black Widow fans

I like Scarlet Johansson’s Black Widow. She looks great, she’s a complex character and she was half of what I define as the best and most emotive (fight) scene in Avengers Endgame, wherein (spoiler) she (a heroine who’s devoted her post-’Snap’ life to protecting people) and Hawkeye (a father who lost his family in ‘The Snap’ and responded by embarking on a killing spree) fought each other because both wanted to be the human sacrifice required to earn an Infinity Stone that they hoped would be able to bring back those lost in ‘The Snap’. Black Widow ‘wins’ the fight and hurls herself to her death – becoming one of only two heroes to die in the movie, and a true martyr. She even made it onto my dresser line-up of personal heroines (see above). So, I was thrilled to hear that a standalone Black Widow movie was in the pipeline – and convinced that she would be more than a feminist icon; until I read this article. Excerpt:

I think this film in particular is very much reflective of what’s going on in regards to the Time’s Up movement and the #MeToo movement,” said Johansson. “It would be such a miss if we didn’t address that stuff, if this film didn’t take that head-on. I think, particularly for Cate, it was so important for her to make a movie about women who are helping other women, who lift other women up out of a very difficulty situation. Someone asked me if Natasha was a feminist. Of course she is; it’s obvious.”

A cinematic tragedy.

University of Leeds Athena SWAN Action Plan investigates lack of men studying psychology

J4MB remain sceptical about the concept of Athena SWAN – which increasingly ties funding to arbitrarily increasing numbers of women in senior positions… But I have to admit that this letter from a team at the University of Leeds in The Psychologist… is interesting and thoughtful.

Sandi Toksvig gives Jeremy Corbyn a run for his money

Our thanks to Alan for this link to a brief interview in The Guardian in which Toksvig laments the overlooked and underestimated half of the population (women, in her estimation) and comes out with this hilarious quote regarding the Women’s Equality Party’s last General Election campaign:

It hardly got any press but we had the most successful general election of any party. We could only afford to stand in five seats so we stood against five male MPs with allegations of sexual impropriety against them. Four stood down and one lost his seat, so we were 100% successful in our plan. It’s a different way of doing politics and I’m hugely proud of it.”

As Alan points out:

In her world the loss of their deposit in every seat they stood for with an average vote of 0.9% means they had ‘the most successful general election of any party.’. In reality of course they are not as successful the results of the party that won – that would be the conservatives, or even as successful as the party that did historically badly (the labour party).

How can she say such ridiculous things without being challenged?”

The woman is more deluded than Jeremy “won the argument” Corbyn!

The new cult of militant misogyny poisoning minds: LAURA BATES

Our thanks to Mike for this link.

It appears that Laura Bates has a new book out – ‘Men Who Hate Women’, so she’s taken to FeMail to make a catalogue of unsubstantiated allegations and spread hysteria, as only she knows how. Her school visits are increasingly meeting with resistance from students – only boys by her account, though I wonder – who doubt her anecdotes and ideology. She reports that, on investigation, it is revealed that the ‘boys’ are being ‘radicalised’ by ‘extremists’ online. She points the finger at the Men’s Rights and Incel communities – but fails to provide evidence, the one name she includes being that of an Andrew Anglin, who I find writes for The Daily Stormer. Ten points for conflation, missy. She warns parents to be mindful of the content their children are consuming (assuming that we’re all pro/feminist, and couldn’t possibly be totally happy for our children to be accessing heterodox information) and disturbingly confirms that she’s been alerting counter-extremist organisations.

Suicide rate for men reaches its highest level in two decades

The Daily Mail has published an article with detailed statistics on suicide, including sex differences. The Office for National Statistics is quoted as saying “Generally, higher rates of suicide among middle-aged men in recent years might be because this group is more likely to be affected by economic adversity, alcoholism and isolation. It could also be that this group is less inclined to seek help.“ In the opinion of J4MB, discriminatory policies as well as the incessant #MeToo/#TimesUp misandry and witch hunts are unlikely to mitigate the pain that leads some men to complete suicide.
