William Collins: Pay and Employment by Sex

This excellent piece was first published in June 2016. My reason for publishing it now is that tomorrow I’ll be engaged in a TV studio discussion with three people, two of them feminists – I’m not sure about the third person at this stage – about the gender pay gap. I plan to refer viewers to Collins’s piece, hence this note.

If everyone who read this gave us just £1 – or even better, £1 monthly – we could change the world. Click here to make a difference. Thanks.

  1. I look forward to seeing this.
    Wouldn’t surprise me if it turned out to be three fem-premacists and your good self as the token male punchbag.
    So don’t rise to unworthy bait!
    And as William says;
    ” blithely ignoring the challenge to male employment must ultimately come forcibly to government attention as the economy nose-dives or as the swelling ranks of the unemployable male underclass gives rise to serious civil unrest.”

    So, opportunistic feminism is also grievous short-termism too for which a terrible price will be paid as a MINIMUM consequence.

    Oh yes, and Bon Chance too!

  2. Good luck. I’m sure all three will be feminists of the Fawcette persuasion. Just today an example of the problem ” Men were less likely to seek help or take time off – 29% had been absent for such problems, compared with 43% of women” In a MIND report on Mental Health http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-40872978 Yet another example of the simple fact that women are simply more likely to be less than full time. As not only are women far more likely to report “mental health problems” (in social care and health “stress” has well overtaken back problems as the prime reason for time off) but much more likely to take time off (as they are for all medical reasons an average of twice as likely).
    I’m a huge supporter of men seeking (male positive) help when they need it. But I can see employers being reluctant to raise an issue which might “equalise” upwards the time male employees have off!
