Belinda Brown and Kate Smurfwit on The Big Questions: ‘Would gender-neutral language be better for mankind?’

A big tip of the hat to Belinda Brown for her appearance in this morning’s edition of The Big Questions on BBC1. The second of three debates, ‘Would gender-neutral language be better for mankind?’ lasts from 21:08 – 39:54, and is available for 29 days. We have no plans to capture the piece for our YouTube channel.

As always Nicky Campbell gave far too much time to feminists – Kate Smurfwit was allowed to witter on at length, as usual – but despite this, Belinda’s contribution to the debate was substantial, passionate and insightful.

If everyone who read this gave us just £1 – or even better, £1 monthly – we could change the world. Click here to make a difference. Thanks.

  1. Gender neutral language? We’ve had that since before the Adventus Saxonnum. None of the Indo European languages lack gender neutral terms.

My postal delivery worker is a woman. When she rings the entryphone (I’m currently and temporarily living in my late father’s flat) she says ‘morning, it’s the postman’. Doesn’t bother her, why should it bother the comedienne* Kate Smurfwit? Similarly, my wife has worked with male veterinary nurses. They are quite happy to describe themselves as nurses, not male nurses or ‘gender nutroix’ (sp?) nurses or whatever the fashionable term is before breakfast.

What stuff and bloody nonsense, as pop would have said, with a scowl.

PS: I couldn’t watch the video as I don’t have a licence, not being a TV owner (never had one officer and would you kindly ask the goon to leave my property immediately).

*nb: ‘Commedienne (n) a comedian who isn’t at all funny.
