Gambling was illegal in the UK until 1961. After that betting shops, like pubs, were almost exclusively a male domain. The rise of gender equality – and the internet – has changed that, but I wonder exactly what the gender balance is. Gambling can be a powerful addiction, and can cause a lot of misery. I suspect it is another factor in the disproportion between the sexes in terms of mental health, suicide and homelessness.
