I have to congratulate Peter Lloyd on a great article so brief but so full of accurate information. In a number of european countries men and women in the top social classes can expect much the same lifespan. The biggest gender differences are, as in Britain, in the lowest social classes. Pretty clearly there is nothing “natural” in a Gender difference as those who have the best show.
Because men, as a group, have had no voice and therefore no political clout.

‘I became a consultant in 1979, the same year that Margaret Thatcher introduced a nationwide breast-screening programme,” says Prof Sikora. “The evidence that this would be effective was very weak but, aware that most floating voters are women, Mrs Thatcher and her advisers pressed ahead regardless. Since then, the screening programme has saved many women. But it has come at phenomenal cost – equivalent to around £1 million per life saved. Of course, every one of those saved lives is wonderful news … ‘
‘The evidence that this would be effective was very weak but, aware that most floating voters are women, Mrs Thatcher and her advisers pressed ahead regardless.’ There’s always money enough when votes can be bought. Men need urgently to start thinking tribally.
Funnily enough I’ve just fallen out with my part-time female GP because of my cynical reception of what I feel is yet another ingenious means of ignoring my health concerns. My wife always seems to walk out of her consulting room with just what she wants, I never walk out feeling anything other than short-changed and frustrated.
‘This year the Chief Medical Officer, Sally Davies, penned her report about women’s health. Next year we want her to do the same about men – with special attention paid to cancer.’
