Our thanks to Martin for this. It’s a scandal that these Entitlement Princesses earn the same prize money as the men, despite playing matches that are on average half the duration of the men’s matches. They attract fewer viewers, tickets for the top women’s games cost less…
I see there are growing calls for the English female football players to earn a lot more money. On the television news this morning I caught the second of Japan’s goals against England in last night’s Women’s World Cup semi-final, the most spectacular goal I’ve ever seen in women’s football, and the goal that meant Japan won the match and reached the final. Unfortunately… er… it was scored by one of the top England players. Her fingernails were immaculately polished, I noticed afterwards. Which was nice.
Surely people who watch women’s football only do so for ideological reasons? If I wanted to watch football played at the same level as that played by the English women’s football team, I could watch teams of boys of 12 years of age playing the game, and I’m not about to do that, either.
I believe that the Swedish National Women’s football team, consistently in the European top 5, were soundly beaten by a team of 16 year old boys from a local club side a few years ago. I understand that the boys had to play a man down and were not allowed to slide tackle to try and even things up. If we lived in a true meritocracy then we would see matches between 16 year old boys on international TV instead of the Women’s World Cup. As far as women getting paid more that is really simple. All they have to do is prove their worth to advertisers, sponsors and TV companies. That will generate the revenue needed to increase their earnings. Just like where the money comes from to pay the men. Sorry, how capitalist of me. In the interests of equality we should levy a special tax on all men’s football clubs and give that money to the women’s clubs. That way everyone is equal. What could be fairer than that?
As for women’s tennis. A few years ago the Williams sisters claimed they could beat any man outside the top 120. After the guy ranked about 123 beat both sisters in consecutive matches they revised their estimate to any man outside the top 200. If there was no separate women’s competition the only way women would see the inside of Wimbledon would be if they bought a ticket. Yet they demand and are given equal prize money to the men.
Women’s events are essentially affirmative action applied to sport. Women cannot compete at the elite level so we drop the standards for them. Then we all pretend that they are at the same level as men and reward them accordingly. But in reality no one wants to go and watch also rans playing in a competition. Why would I want to pay to watch an “elite” woman’s competition when I see my sons playing a superior game at the local park on the weekend?
And can anyone tell me why there are women only chess competitions?

Reminds me of Peru versus Scotland in the 1978 World Cup. See Ally’s despair in the third photo at http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/special/politics97/devolution/scotland/briefing/football.shtml. Such is life in sport. 🙂 🙂

The reason for all this ‘make believe’ is that men have confused the genuine gentleman’s ettiquette with artificially propping up 2nd rate female workers and athletes-at men’s expense. Correctly, some time ago female tennis players were paid a token amount less than men to acknowledge the difference in performance. Unfortunately, the more men confuse the meaning of the word gentleman, the more ridiculous these double standards are becoming. It is entirely up to men to start distinguishing between lending a hand to a woman with pram on the train, and turning a blind eye to female workers perks and privileges, and female athletes’ lesser performnce for equal pay..
And yes, even chess tournaments are separate for men and women, where physical power has no meaning…Unfortunately but truthfully, men outperform women in both physical as well as intellectual
capacity. There is no reason our society should deny this obvious fact. Not even on gentlemanly grounds !

That’s very sensible in an age when men watching children engaging in outdoor activities are automatically suspected of being paedophiles. Watching children enjoying anything is another of those ‘women: yes of course, naturally, who could possibly object; men: oh yes, and what are you up to you filthy pervert’ areas of our communal life.

It occurred to me after posting the above that one of the reasons for criminalising men who want to watch junior sports could very well be that men who have no idea how good boys are at sport can have no idea how bad women are in comparison.
Just a thought.

Noted this
Serena and Venus Williams used to brag that they could beat any man ranked below 200th. Karsten Braasch was ranked 203 and took them up on it. Here’s what happened:
“Before the matches, Braasch played a round of golf in the morning, drank a couple of beers, smoked a few cigarettes, and then played the Williams sisters for a set each, one after the other. He defeated Serena, 6-1, and Venus, 6-2. Serena said afterwards “I didn’t know it would be that hard. I hit shots that would have been winners on the women’s tour and he got to them easily.” ”
But really its about paying customers. The best policy is indeed to base reward on the star/s audience draw . Though I find premiership footy boring their stars are just that stars, like music, films etc. Women’s footy gets an airing then its about does it put bums on seats?
