Mike Buchanan’s first article for ‘International Business Times’: Cameron’s naive crusade for boardroom gender diversity will only hurt Britain

I’ve been commissioned by International Business Times to write a series of fortnightly articles on men’s issues. Given the title of the (online) publication, I thought I might start with a business-related topic, the outrageous government initiative forcing FTSE100 companies to appoint more women to their boards, regardless of the availability of women capable of making strong contributions to such organisations. The article is here.

  1. I took a course in equality and diversity three years ago, while working full-time, in a voluntary capacity, as a charity administrator. It was filled with nonsense like that (an ethnically diverse workforce improves performance, women in senior positions improve performance, we’re all enriched by sharing our different experiences in a ‘non judgemental’ way and so on and so on) and as I read the stuff I could picture a room filled with eager if not very bright groupthink types, selected for their suggestibility and lack of critical faculties, calling out one absurd suggestion after another, and congratulated and encouraged as the ‘positives’ were scrawled on a flip chart or white board. None of the bald statements were backed by any arguments or sources and to score highly it was necessary only to repeat the rubbish in the course booklet.

What is alarming about all this nonsense is how the drones who spout it can, once programmed, be wound up, switched on and left to run on and on and on without ever winding down, rather like the little drumming monkey in a battery advertisement from thirty or forty years ago.

  2. A good, solid, well-chosen subject for a first article. So pleased to see Mike as a columnist and I hope this leads to more offers from the media because this type of publicity is what out future generation of boys desperately need. I’m feeling much more positive thanks to Mike Buchanan.
