Vera Baird’s response to our recent public challenge concerning domestic violence

We’ve issued public challenges to many gender feminists (and their male collaborators) and we always email the people in question to make them aware of our challenges. They seldom even acknowledge receipt of the emails, and we’ve never had a substantive response from any of them – until yesterday.

We recently issued a public challenge to Vera Baird QC, a gender feminist former Labour MP in the mould of Harriet Harman, and currently the Police and Crime Commissioner of Northumbria. Our blog piece on the challenge:

The challenge:

Almost 300 studies and reports from around the world show that women are as physically aggressive or more aggressive than men towards their intimate partners:

Given the large numbers of male victims of domestic violence in Northumbria, what commitment will you be making – if any – to increase the number of convictions of female perpetrators of domestic violence, thereby driving down the incidences of violence against men and children?

Late on Friday we were surprised but delighted to receive an email from a lady working for Ms Baird, with her response. We’ve made a number of comments in response to the points she made, and asked a number of questions. The exchange can be found on the link below, and we’ll update you with the exchange as it develops.

Ms Baird has, you will note, not yet responded to our challenge.

  1. These new Police have great power over the police and local criminal justice. Ms. Baird in government repeatedly brushed off evidence of male victimisation. The operation of the VAWG Strategy will support her stance in Northumberland. A public body the Office of the commissioner has to respond to Freedom of Information requests (make sure you quote Freedom of Information). Northumbrians could ask for Northhumbrians could ask for the data for their region as reflected in the BCS to compare with reported crime.

  2. Found some of those posters for you Mike, note the sexist text in the circle at the top right:

Interestingly, it seems that they ran the same posters in 2012 without the sexist logo, see here:
    http://www.itv.com/news/tyne-tees/2012-12-06/christmas-campaign-against-domestic-violence/
Those posters would have almost certainly been designed before Baird was in office, this suggests she is responsible for the misandirst addition seen in 2013.

You can tell how sexist they are now that Baird is in charge, all help links on their dv website either go to LGBT charities or feminist organisations Not a single mention of the Mankind initiative which is the leading charity helping male victims of abuse.

I also thought it was telling that they don’t cite a single source for any of the ridiculous claims made in that reply. Completely unprofessional.

  3. Though I can fully understand the difficulty of campaigning against something so worthy as ending Violence Against Women and Girls. The Strategy is a vehicle to do exactly what Hequal points out. It is a cover to blank out the little recognition and support available to men. It also effectively cements into public policy that only men are violent. I can not overstate the power of this national strategy in the hands of powerful Gender feminists such as Baird.
