Every young man needs to watch this video (3:51). A 27-year-old woman, Lindsey Hill, falsely accused star baseball player Trevor Bauer, worth $51m, of sexual assault. Yet it happens all the time in the UK (an estimated 77% of rape allegations reported to the police are false, estimates William Collins – using two official statistics – in The Empathy Gap). The false allegations completely destroyed Bauer’s baseball career in the US. He had to move to Japan to play on a baseball team there.

The repercussions of the abuse are devastating: At least a dozen boys died by suicide in 2022, after they were blackmailed, according to the FBI. Meanwhile, social media companies are playing catch up to stem the tidal wave of sextortion scams targeting children. Researchers who study sextortion say teens are particularly vulnerable because of the stage of their brain development. “Our center receives an incredibly disproportionate number of help requests from male victims,” said Sameer Hinduja, co-director of the Cyberbullying Research Center and a professor of criminology at Florida Atlantic University. “Presuming that sexting is a precursor to sextortion, it is possible that females may send nudes more so in the context of a romantic relationship whereas males may do so more casually and experimentally. This fact makes males more of an easy target.”

SINGAPORE: Jail for Zhang Lutian, 22, who lied about being raped by ex-boyfriend after an argument

Zhang had a mitigation plea prepared, but had to let an interpreter read it on her behalf after she broke down crying in the dock. In her plea, she asked for a fine instead of a jail term, saying she had just turned 21 a month before the offences and her “cognitive ability for legal terms and awareness of the seriousness of the crime (was) still very immature”. [J4MB: At what age do women move on from being “very immature”?] Zhang said she suffers from severe depression and anxiety, and claimed her ex-boyfriend had treated her rudely during disputes. [J4MB: Men, remember – be polite to your female partner during disputes.] Describing the moment when she made the false allegations, Zhang said: “My mind was not conscious at the point in time. [J4MB translation: “Don’t hold me accountable for my actions, I’m a woman!”] I was too desperate at the time and I wanted protection from the police.” She said her ex-boyfriend has since forgiven her. [J4MB: What an idiot.]
