As someone who enjoys good cigars, but can rarely afford them these days – I am more often a pipe smoker – I was interested to read this by Mary Harrington, the author of Feminism Against Progress. William Collins’s lengthy critique of the book is in two parts, here and here.

We’re always looking for new members for the J4MB Smoking Club. An extract from a related post:

“Recent research by cultural historians at the University of Swindon established a clear causal link between the decline in pipe smoking in the UK, and the rise of feminism. The findings have yet to be published online, but we’ll publish the report as soon as it’s made available.

Given the causal link, it’s clearly important to reverse the decline in pipe smoking in the UK, to reverse the influence of feminism. Pipe smoking needs to become fashionable again, for men of all ages to discover (or re-discover) the pleasures of the habit.

The club will only admit male members – perhaps I could have phrased that better – but anti-feminist ladies will be permitted at events as guests of club members, so long as they’re smoking. Elizabeth Hobson, who much appreciates the occasional Havana, is looking forward to joining us.”

Yesterday was International Women’s Day, apparently. The BBC broadcasts on Radio 3 every Saturday “J to Z”, on jazz music. Today’s programme is titled, “International Women’s Day Special”. A woman says this at the start:

“And now, here on BBC Radio 3, it’s time for “J to Z”, and a second chance to hear an episode first broadcast for International Women’s Day last year.”

A rare outbreak of common sense at the BBC. I won’t be listening to the episode, but I look forward to the BBC repeating it again in future years ad infinitum.

“I am sorry for the Minister that, unfortunately, there are no Back-Bench Labour MPs here today. That is really disappointing. It just proves what they would do with working-class boys and boys as a whole if they did get into Government: not a lot. Unfortunately, we are where we are, but I thank everyone on this side.”

The end of the very welcome debate on the attainment gap in education (spoiler: the gap is very much in girls favour) The debate is a welcome but rare foray into the many “gaps” that affect males in our society. 

The opening speeches are particularly good at giving the facts and much of the debate is good in terms of information and even policy solutions, including more male teachers. However as we know the reality falls far short of these solutions. I have copied the part of the closing remarks because it illustrates the distance still to be travelled for boys to be getting the opportunity of a good education, when the political party supposed to be representing the working class can so completely ignore working class boys.
