Our thanks to Nigel for this, an archived piece published yesterday in the Telegraph. Wes Streeting, 41, is a Labour MP and has been the Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Social Care since 2021. Nigel writes:
“Wes Streeting is “angry” about male suicide and men’s shorter lifespans. Good. But I doubt the regiment of feminists in his party would let an effective health strategy for men see the light of day. There isn’t a “crisis in masculinity” but the simple fact is “our NHS” is mainly concerned with women. Just as the education of boys comes second after prioritising girls.”
An extract from the Telegraph article:
“I think lots of young men, particularly working class boys, are struggling in school and worried about their futures. And I think that that’s contributing to a sort of crisis in masculinity, with mental ill-health rising, and suicide being the biggest single biggest killer of young men under 50,” he said.
“Young men under 50”. Right. Like politicians in all the major parties, Streeting makes no mention of the absence of a national screening programme for prostate cancer, which kills more men than breast cancer kills women. Of course putting the blame for the high male suicide rate on men’s “mental health issues” is victim blaming of the worst sort, and distances politicians from a responsibility to reduce the rate through addressing the well-known issues which most commonly lead to men taking their own lives.
Life for many men and boys will inevitably worsen under the forthcoming Labour government.
