‘Groundbreaking’ scan for men with prostate cancer could save lives

Interesting (Times, £). The article references a forthcoming £2 million trial for PSMA PET/CT scans, which provide more information on whether or not prostate cancer has spread around the body, so treatment can be tailored to each patient.

The tests have been around for years so this is another example of poor healthcare coverage for males. A piece published five years ago by the National Cancer Institute in the United States, PSMA PET-CT Accurately Detects Prostate Cancer Spread, Trial Shows.

Dedicated male abuse survivors line faces closure

Outrageous. The start of the piece:

“The only support service in the country for male sexual abuse victims could be forced to close.

The National Male Survivor Helpline (NMSH) is funded entirely by the government but the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) is to end the £250,000-a-year it has received since 2016.

Service users have said the NMSH, which is operated by Safeline, has been a “lifeline” for many victims of abuse.

The MoJ said its Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Line (RSASL) was available to offer free, confidential help to all survivors aged 16 and over.”

Rachel Watson, the first female Director General of the Independent Office for Police Conduct: “My reflections on International Women’s Day”

Give me strength. It contains this gem:

“You may have seen studies that found that women’s presence on companies’ boards generally increases profits.”

She is clearly alluding to a causal link. Nobody has ever seen any such studies, because they have never existed, and never will. A causal link resulting from increasing gender diversity on companies’ boards is with financial decline. If I had a pound for every time I’ve written such sentences since 2012, I’d be living in a beautiful apartment in Mauritius with a swimming pool.

Mark Carney, mangina, former Governor of the Bank of England, set to be the next Canadian prime minister

Mark Carney was the Governor of the Bank of England over 2013-20, and a committed mangina, a male feminist. Dick Masterson employed the word in his masterpiece Men Are Better Than Women (2008).

In his role at the Bank of England Carney increased the number of women in senior roles i.e. he reduced the number of men in senior roles. In 2014 we posted a blog piece, Our public challenge of Mark Carney, Governor, Bank of England. An extract:

Last week a national newspaper reported Carney as warmly welcoming the ‘success’ of initiatives designed to increase the number of women in senior roles at the Bank of England, and then he came out with this gem: “Hiring more women in senior roles makes us much, much more effective.”
