Our thanks to N for this. The Reform UK conference will be held at the NEC in Birmingham over the coming Friday and Saturday, 5/6 September. A Reform UK insider tells me Jacob will be presented at the conference as the party’s candidate for a seat at the next general election.

Is oxygen flammable?

In September 1975 (50 years ago, to the month) I started a chemistry degree at one of the three most prestigious universities in the UK – Oxford, Cambridge, or Reading. I will not be drawn on which one, for hopefully obvious reasons.

You will appreciate that my chemistry knowledge is a bit rusty after half a century. I never practised chemistry in my work career, going straight into business management after university, firstly with the Beecham corporation. So you will hopefully understand that when someone recently asked me whether oxygen is flammable, I struggled to give an answer.

I invite you to provide your answer (with your thinking on the matter) and will be publishing comments in two days’ time. It would defeat the object of the exercise to research the question online (or otherwise) before answering, so please go ahead and comment. I look forward to your responses.

Our website Campaign for Merit in Business was created in the light of the considerable evidence of a causal link between increasing gender diversity on boards and corporate financial decline. Mike Buchanan, Steve Moxon and Dr Catherine Hakim (the originator of Preference Theory) presented evidence to House of Commons and House of Lords inquiries in 2012, the video of their House of Commons evidence session is here (56:50).

As this woman wins case against employer over ADHD, firms should take note

“On the theme of being suspicious this caught my eye. The first thing is that it’s yet another thing that begins with males and then “spreads” to women. PTSD being an obvious example, initially men having experienced hell (e.g. in wars), and eventually an actress who leaves a dancing competition suffering from “mild PTSD”! Or RSI initially affecting men operating pneumatic drills and other such tools but then an epidemic amongst women who use keyboards in offices.

So it shouldn’t be a surprise that ADHD “spreads” to females and “This is a trend that is particularly pronounced among older women” in the workplace. “You don’t want to be cynical,” said Ms McGlone. Well I’m sorry I’m very cynical about sudden dramatic increases in “diagnoses” that effectively obtain concessions in workplaces. “I was trying to avoid taking the legal route because I really liked the company. This was my dream job, I loved it, and I knew I could do it. So I was trying to manage it in my head and trying to do what they asked. But when I realised that I couldn’t, I was experiencing anxiety.”

Could it possibly be she just wasn’t up to the job?

Nestle fires chief executive Laurent Freixe after romantic relationship with employee
