Dr Balvinder Mehat to appear in a hearing before the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service.

Dr Balvinder Mehat is a Sikh doctor and mutilator of boys’ genitals for personal gain, who has long run the Bakersfield Medical Centre in Nottingham. Our interest in the man relates to two cases in which it was alleged he hadn’t obtained proper approval from one of the parents of the boys being subjected to MGM – in one case the mother (Mehat was suspended by the GMC for a month in 2019 in relation to this case, BBC piece on it here), and in the case I’m writing about today (from 2022, when the boy was seven years old), the father. Our blog pieces on Mehat are here. The BBC covered the latter case in 2024, here.

My thanks to a person following the latter case for alerting us to the fact that Mehat will shortly appear in a hearing (from 2 November) before the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service in Manchester – details on their website, here.

In 2018 I lodged papers in Nottingham with a view to bringing a private prosecution of Mehat, on the grounds that performing MGM is a crime under the Offences Against the Person Act 1861, being at least ABH and almost certainly GBH. My blog piece here. Unfortunately a judge denied me leave to bring the prosecution.

We shall bring you details from the new hearing in due course.
