Interesting. Male life expectancy is about four years shorter than female life expectancy in Australia. In 2025, the NHMRC invested $16.7 million in men’s health research and $101.5 million in women’s health research, amounting to a six times greater investment into women’s than men’s health research.

Trying to find this sort of data id fascinating. It’s really really difficult. What you do get from the various funding councils is reams and reams about the sex of the researchers. It seems it’s a big problem that overall over 60% of research awards are to men. Yet again the bodies that should be focussed on the best and most relevant research, are far more bothered in funding more women to do research! There are various reports on gender and investment in medicine but they are uniformly fact free. I take this as evidence that it is the same as Australia, because if the figures showed an imbalance in favour of men they’d be full of it.
