Jess does her usual Jess Phillips spends seven minutes naming women killed by a man in the last year | News UK | Metro News Apparently there were 108. Which of course is in fact a remarkably small number of murders in a population of 66 millions. A number with no statistical significance at all with regards to a trend or an indicator of a social movement. A quick check showed the ONS data counted 522 homicides in the same year in the UK so there were a lot more men killed (though the 414 could include some women killed by women of course) an 8% reduction on the previous year overall. In fact the numbers have been fairly consistent over decades with “blips” in years with terrorist attacks. So given the rapid rise in population over those decades homicide of all sorts has fallen both absolutely and relatively. But again the numbers are so small in terms of the overall population the only reasonable conclusion is that the UK remains a remarkably safe place for men and women in terms of the risk of being killed unlawfully.
Given the actually tiny numbers in reality its unlikely there is any intervention that any Government can make to make such random and rare occurrences vanish. Which of course makes it ideal for shameless ideologues like “tear full” Jess to attach them to “more services” and “government action” knowing there is nothing actually that will ever get to 0.
As a matter of fact the Soviet Union and its Eastern European satellites claimed that it was zero there. Because in the perfect socialist society they had eradicated all causes of criminal behaviour specially murder and extreme violence. Of course they hadn’t and had to grudgingly admit that there were in fact homicides, the rescuing explanation being that all were done by “mentally deranged” people untouched by socialism’s wonderful equality.
While researching the topic I found this Latvia still leads EU on homicides, particularly of women / Article It seems that the UK is pretty average in terms of % of homicides male and female (73% male) compared to the larger populations in the EU Countries (France, Italy etc.) Perhaps mor surprising is that “Gender Equal” Norway (according to the UN) regularly tops 50% women, something I doubt they want to trumpet as a success for equality. Latvia is 60% women and Austria, Iceland, Malta, Switzerland along with other smaller countries either wildly fluctuate or bump along in the mid to high 40% female. Intriguingly Turkey, Albania, Serbia are amongst the lowest % female victims at 20%. Perhaps our Jess should visit Ankara or Belgrade to learn of their success!
