  1. ‘Millions of men’ to be affected by huge decision for NHS next week – The Mirror

“The condition is the UK’s most common cancer. Every year there are 55,300 cases and 12,200 deaths.” Yet still they’re equivocating. And the reason is hidden in this quote.

“It’s a head versus heart decision,” Chiara de Biase, the director of health services, equity and improvement at Prostate Cancer UK told the Times. “Your heart is saying ‘just screen everybody, let’s give everybody a PSA test’. But it’s not harmless, and not doing harm is just as important to us as finding cancers.”

For of course for Breast Cancer the “heart” wins hands down, there is a massive set of screenings, campaigns etc. The various scandals about nis diagnoses and huge batches of faulty tests/results haven’t prevented a huge roll out. But for men ? Well somehow experience tells me “the head” will triumph and the best that can be hoped for is “targeted” screening for black men and men with a “family history” of prostate cancer. So older white and brown men will have to just get by as best they can it seems. With the most common cancer in the country………. and supposedly its men’s fault that the primary reason for their much worse survival rates from cancers are because of late diagnosis! If it were any other group, who routinely are diagnosed too late, such a scenario would be a reason for proactive testing, not a reason not to bother.
