The late Anthony Burgess, British novelist and sometime composer, was brought up Catholic. He pointed out in an interview many years ago, that Catholicism is often a kind of tribal identity. When it doesn’t go beyond that, that’s when you have a conflict between faith-identity and the values a man actually lives by. The Pope is right to flag this up.
