One thought on “Men and Masculinity: The Missing Pieces in a Boy’s Life”
This is interesting. Including perspectives from two “trans men” I asked trans men about their thoughts on masculinity. They feel bad for teenage boys As one might expect from a n American journalist writing in the Independent it contains the obligatory feminist analyses. But the actual experiences of the two are very interesting, specially following Prof. Fiamengo’s piece on Norah Vincent’s book.
“If you’re raising a boy today, the available scientific evidence suggests you should probably concentrate on providing access to four main things: hugs, sports, books, and a strong male role model in their life who can provide an example of positive masculinity.”
Of course it turns out the “trans” experience the very different physiology of males, though doing so in an “unnatural” process of carefully managed progression does mean it is a different experience. However picking through feminist cliches it is interesting how the experiences undermine the feminist presumptions.
One interesting bit that made me laugh was the observation that the supposed “manosphere” tricks adolescent boys by saying if they query stuff like the gender pay gap, DEI etc. they will be shut down even punished. The boys raise a query, they experience being shut down or punished and this is an example of the “tricks” of influencers leading young men into the “far right”. Of course ignoring the fact that what happens is exactly as predicted! The problem is not the “manosphere” but those who shut down and punish the mere suggestion of a different perspective or even actual facts! Were the boys responded to intelligently then the “influencers” “tricks” would be dead in the water. As it is the feminist orthodoxy does the work of alienating the Boys and young men, not the supposed cleverness of the Manosphere. “When those efforts inevitably lead to rejection or conflict, such influencers will tell boys that they’ve now proven how society is weighted against them, “so they very sneakily and intentionally draw them toward the far-right”.
Perhaps its inevitable that the “goggles” are feminist, it being the current orthodoxy of the Anglosphere, but so much experienced actually contradicts that orthodoxy.
