We recently posted a piece, The Brian Buckle case – calls to amend payout rules for wrongly convicted. He’s just started a petition, Demand compensation for wrongfully convicted man, 5 years in prison before being acquitted. I’ve donated £10 and would urge you to donate what you can. Thank you.

Hi Mike,
I have donated & signed the petition too. Readers may know this, but what boils my urine about something like this is the man has been acquitted but is supposedly not innocent enough to qualify for compensation.
Yet any complainant can come forward and claim to be a victim of a sexual offence, and they will qualify for compensation under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act scheme – even if their case is never prosecuted or convicted.
If those “victims” don’t have to prove in a court of law they were abused in order to qualify for compensation, then why the hell does Brian Buckle have to prove anything to qualify for compensation, the guy has already spent 5 years in prison for a crime he has now been acquitted of!!!
DOUBLE STANDARDS

Yes the Criminal Injuries “Compensation” is a great incentive. Back when I was more involved it was nearly £9000, possibly not much by MPs standards, but a substantial amount to women on benefits. It was referred to as “compo” alongside other scams , trips or slips on council pavements, “whiplash”, ” backache, etc. It is an easy one because all you need is for the accusation to be “crimed” on the Police system.

It is madness. Not only was this man’s conviction overturned but he was taken to trial and Acquitted by a Jury ! If a Jury isn’t enough then what is?
