Our thanks to Nigel for this latest piece (video, 10:16) by Alexander Grace. Nigel writes:
“This is interesting. Grace points out the contrast between FGM and MGM but what’s particularly interested me, as an economist, were the indicators in fertility treatment and adoption and fostering. The comparatively free market in the US produces the stats that the money paid for fertility treatments is to secure girl babies and adoptive parents are willing to spend $16,000 more to adopt a girl. I note that this sort of data is now hidden in the USA. To be frank, I think that data on how people spend their money is a better indicator of the reality of gender bias, rather than what people say. And in the USA it’s pretty clear boys are valued far less than girls. In this country it’s less easy to get such clear data. However the effect is clear with far fewer boys being adopted or fostered and consequently far more being cared for in temporary foster homes or institutions …. and quite a few accounting for the rough sleeping and prison populations.”

When we applied to become foster parents about 30 years ago we were told that boys were more likely to be placed in care than girls. To me that sounded like parents showing a preference for girls and were more likely to “abandon ” boys. But our female social worker said that she believed that it was because girls are more useful at doing jobs in the home and are kept to be exploited . No doubt she would interpret the preference for girl babies in the same way. It just goes to show that if you want to present women and girls as victims you can manage it in almost any situation.
