Focus on final-year exams at Oxbridge may disadvantage female students – report

Our thanks to Jeff for this. The start of the article:

“A focus on final-year exams at Oxbridge could be disadvantaging female students who are “less likely to take risks” and suffer from premenstrual syndrome (PMS), a report suggests.

A paper published by the Higher Education Policy Institute (Hepi) think tank explores possible reasons why men are more likely to secure a first-class degree at the universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

Across UK universities females generally outperform their male peers in graduating with first-class and upper second-class undergraduate degrees. [J4MB emphasis: No problem here, move along…]

But almost all courses at Oxford and Cambridge have a first-class degree awarding gap favouring men, according to the report.” [J4MB emphasis: Scandalous, something must be done to rectify this appalling reality…]

The end of the article:

“Professor Martin Williams, pro-vice-chancellor for Education at the University of Oxford, said: “The University is committed to addressing gaps in degree outcomes where they exist and has set a target to eliminate the current gap between our male and female undergraduate students by 2030. [J4MB emphasis]

“Progress has been made in some subject areas, but the reasons for this gap are varied and highly complex. [J4MB emphasis: No, they’re not. Men out-perform women at the top level in everything, unless disadvantaged in some way, as the University of Oxford is committed to doing here.]

“We are working hard to understand this issue through extensive engagement with students, and are introducing measures including flexible teaching, mixed assessment methods, [J4MB translation – methods to advantage women and disadvantage men] study skills support, as well as enhanced data provision to enable us to better target support.” “

  1. Well of course the first point is that they don’t know why the gap is, announcing the reasons are “varied and highly complex” simply says “we don’t know”. The second is that Oxford (and Cambridge) are regarded as elite (and they trumpet this) superior to their peers so why would they take what happens in lesser Universities as the measure. Where apparently the “varied and highly complex ” reasons must either be a. equally obscure or b. these Universities have targeted their “support” more accurately! Which leads us on to the final point. If it is the case that in both these elite and lesser Universities the differing results are shaped by “targeted support” what exactly does this say about female students? It suggests unequal treatment in order to make up for a deficit in their performance. Which of course means that male students are to be directly discriminated against and if the support does not work the way to reach same outcomes will be to drop standards to the level of female students. The bottom line is that the plans assume males are more capable of better outcomes and where they don’t achieve equal outcomes with females the “varied and highly complex reasons” for this will remain unexplored. Bottom line standards will have to fall and/or males will be deliberately denied the best input in order to handicap them.

  2. all this tells me is the following

first class oxbridge degrees by men are intrinsically more valuable because of the deliberate bias against men.

first class oxbridge degrees by women are intrinsically less valuable because of the deliberate bias in favour of women in the same manner that we all regard media studies, gender studies, and any other degree that requires ignorance, indoctrination etc.

I wonder if they understand that employers will eventually not rely on the name oxbridge in front of a degree unlesss they verify in great detail. This has the same consequences as grade inflation, employers will simply demand more( often in the same foolish way they have done with other qualifications in the past).

if you want the ulitmate litmus test then simply replace gender with any other characteristic( race, religion, sexuality etc) and see how well hepi can push this.

.. and to think that Hepi get well paid for this??
