  1. As always the good Doctor is worth listening to. And how rare for anyone to consider the impact on men at all, of anything. It so happened that this popped up on my news page.

We can’t afford to leave our unhappy marriages — why a ‘divorce fund’ is a must for every couple | Metro News

On reading it, of course the “we” are women. The subject is in fact a very clear window into the female psyche and social attitudes. For the truth is that it is women who are the vast majority of those who file for divorce. Such filings have been falling, and the reason? That divorce is now less financially advantageous for women now the cost of living has risen. As usual the gender pay gap (said to be just 7% hardly vast) and an even tinier savings gap is cited. But in the examples in the article the “trapped” women admit they earn half their husbands income. Surprisingly the husbands who they’d like to “bin” are reported to be good providers and the “problems” appear trivial which are used to justify this desire to leave. And the issue blocking the women bravely setting out on their own….. well the reduction in “lifestyle” and likely need for a bit of belt tightening. So we are left with the rather clear behaviour that divorce rates fluctuate because of the expectations wives have about the financial effects on their lifestyles. Not very edifying.

Oh and needless to say not one word about the effect on the husbands of this, the empathy gap in action.
