An appalling piece of garbage (video, 13:45) published yesterday. The people who run The Times should be ashamed of themselves.

As today was mother’s day . I took my mum to see Titanic the Musical (a stage show filmed for showing in cinemas). Contrary to my expectation this was not a sort of rehash of the famous movie. In fact it was something of a revelation. Part of this was to do with the male characters. In this these were rounded and sympathetically portrayed. The themes included male hopes and aspirations, sense of responsibility, dignity and love. These days I’m surprised at any theatre or movie examining these in their male characters. The other surprise was some actual facts related to the “Birkenhead Drill”, for instance 50 of the “crew” who stayed were teenage (14-18) serving staff (all male) And that all but one (Mrs Strauss who insisted on staying with her husband) of the first class women got in the lifeboats. Overall of course only 20% of the males on board survived. 75% of the women survived and unexpectedly only just over 50% of the children (reflecting there were few children in first and second class) As males were the overwhelming majority of the staff and crew,of the 1517 fatalities 1347 were males.
In fact for overall figures the class of passengers was crucial for passengers, as one of the characters points out the first and second class “muster” was right by the life boats.
So in 1911 during peak “patriarchy” and no doubt an era of “toxic masculinity” well over 1000 males put women first. And rather like now the people who most benefitted from that, was the most privileged women. Somehow the whole show said a lot about today as it did 1911.
