Professor Eric Anderson on schoolboys’ brain damage resulting from playing contact sports (notably rugby)

In our final manifesto (p.33)  we covered the issue of brain damage resulting from schoolboys playing contact sports. Eric Anderson is an American and a Professor of Sport, Health and Social Sciences at the University of Winchester. He gave a memorable talk at ICMI18 and is a well-known campaigner against schoolboys playing contact sports, in the light of the risk of brain damage. Earlier this evening Eric was interviewed by Trisha Goddard for her TalkTV show. He was on good form, the relevant section of the video file is 2:25:12 – 2:41:40.

  1. Prof Anderson makes a very good point about children and adults. Ie that the former are not as knowledgeable as adults. And the latter can be expected to make their own choices but children require some guidance and possibly protection. In the same programme there is a discussion about child marriage (unlikely to actually be tackled because its is really confined to favoured ethnic groups) and the murder and conviction of children and their naming. All points that presume children aren’t fully knowledgeable and responsible. Yet we are in a society where the elite, in terms of transgender, supposed sexual assaults and abuse by children (let’s be honest boys) and expressing “hate crime” or having sexual relationships, thinks it’s just fine for children to be treated as fully capable and responsible. In reality it’s the adults that have gone mad.

  2. I note the Prof. is still extolling the virtues of team sports at school. This from David Kurten on GB news https://www.threads.net/@gbnews/post/C28MhkGIgvM
Reminded me that before Covid 19 the Chinese President was announcing a radical over hall of education in China to include team sports and history extolling “martial” virtues and prowess. Explicitly to counter the influence of “effete” pop culture on boys in particular. And of course we’ve had a number of stories about the similar policies in Russia and Ukraine. Though I’d not advocate such direct propaganda in our education, clearly as a practical step for our future survival, it wouldn’t hurt to support the development of a sense of patriotism and stoical virtues through sports and basic “civics”.
