  1. I did eventually go and see Barbie (at the “Silver Screen” showing for pensioners five quid and free coffee and biscuits). It was funny and in a way either intentionally or not a good satire on La la Land. My takeaway was it was a load of cartoon characters with “Ken” being by far the most interesting character because he actually has a dramatic journey of ups and downs. I suspect this is in the writing rather than the acting but I can well see that the most memorable character is Ken precisely because he is rather less one dimensional and has some internal and external struggles. It reminded me of a friends comment about the “reboot” of the Star Wars franchise with a female “jedi”, his problem was that with the previous incarnations Luke Skywalker and Anakin (Darth Vader) they had a “dramatic arc” as they struggled to develop and train and grow up and indeed love. “Rey” however is somehow a kick ass fighter from the start and is practically perfect in every way right from the start. No real drama.
I would like to think “the academy” has sufficient independent minded members to enjoy the irony of Ken and Ryan Gosling being the award winner, but I’m sure Barbie will win the producer Oscar (giving the girls an award) and Ryan won’t have to make a convoluted acceptance speech.
