I’ve played chess occasionally for 50+ years, and I’m currently trying to improve my game. One element in that was joining chess.com, which has 100+ million users. The Wiki page is here, the actual website here. I note that the governing body for chess, The International Chess Federation or World Chess Federation, commonly referred to by its French acronym FIDE, still runs a Women’s World Chess Championship. Maybe it should be retitled, “The World Chess Championship for People Unable to Compete With Men”. The existence of the championship begs two rhetorical questions:

Why do women’s chess championships exist? Do women have no shame?

Just published. The piece reminded me of a number of things:

• The estimable Rod Lonsdale publicly bollocked Penny Dreadful at Speakers’ Corner in 2018, here.
• Professor David Starkey’s publicly bollocked Penny in 2012, it remains a favourite on our Comedy Channel, here.
• Around 11/12 years ago, before Penny wrote a libellous piece in the New Statesman following an interview with me, I was sat on a bench on London Underground. A young woman in a short tartan mini-skirt and black DM boots (always a firm favourite combo with straight men) sat next to me. I did a double-take and said to her, “Hi, you’re Kat Banyard, aren’t you?” She said, “No, but Kat’s a friend”. It was Penny, of course. We had a fairly uncomfortable exchange.
• In 2013 Kat Banyard won our inaugural ‘Lying Feminist of the Month’ award after claims she made in an interview with Jon Snow, the infamous Channel 4 mangina. The award is here, the video here. I doubt there’s a connection, but I haven’t encountered the damnable woman’s name since.
