Love Island hit by hundreds of Ofcom complaints from furious viewers over ‘toxic femininity’ row and Movie Night drama which left male contestants in tears

Our thanks to Eli for this. The start of the piece:

Love Island has been hit by more than 300 Ofcom complaints over ‘toxic’ behaviour from the female stars.

I couldn’t be less interested in the story but it reminded me of Karen Straughan’s talk at ICMI16, Toxic femininity (video, 45:16).

  1. I can understand your attitude. Though “love island” does tell us a lot abut the truth of our society. Very clearly its an excuse to show practically naked attractive young women and men, its pretty clear the interest includes sex and multiple partners, and in effect its about transient and casual relationships. All of which is supposedly made alright by “consent”. Each series appears to throw up different “casualties” and “issues”, yet the basic premise is never challenged. So it is no surprise that the people involved often end up exhibiting the worst sides of humanity. In a sense its a good exhibition each time of how “toxic” our society’s contradictions are.
