Our thanks to Nigel for this. He writes:
It’s taken a long time for Welby to admit he and his Church were only too easily taken in, in a rush to “believe” the “victim”, who it turns out in two subsequent inquiries, actually presented no evidence. As the accused was already dead the Church simply trashed Bell and handed over over £16,000 to the woman. Interestingly about the same amount the Criminal Injuries fund hands out to any woman claiming sexual assault/rape before it is proven or even gets to court. Now I realise to many of the great and the good £16,000 seems a trifling amount that they’d barely get out of bed for, let alone tell some lies to get their hands on. But in the real world that is a year’s “take home” pay to the majority of earners and in “compo culture” more that you can get for a fictitious accident or set-up car bump.
With far less chance of being looked into seriously than other scams, because there is no need for it to be proven, it is in fact one of the easier scams to pull off. Simply waiting for the courts to establish the truth of a “criminal injury” before paying out would save the taxpayer large amounts and give the message that this sort of “compo” claim is no longer such an easy scam. Oh, and it may prevent the living from being placed under a “cloud”.
