Our thanks to Douglas for an interesting article on the “Dentistry” website by Neel Kothari, in response to an article in British Dental Journal calling for more women on dental boards. Neel speaks sense, though he fails to challenge one of the claims in the BDJ journal:
The authors suggest that balanced boards are needed as diversity leads to better outcomes. They reference work by Lord Davies of Abersoch that looked at the board ratio of FTSE 100 companies.
The authors of the authors in the BDJ are referencing work that did NOT show that “balanced boards” leads to better outcomes. Indeed the Executive Summary of the initial Davies Report (2011) claimed that evidence showed such a link, with a reference number next to it. At the bottom of the page there was no text to the side of the reference number. Of course there’s a well-established causal link between appointing more women to boards and corporate financial DECLINE.
