Our thanks to Nigel for this, by two women at the BBC. He writes:
Of course there are plenty of salacious reports in the media. But using the slightly more temperate BBC report this morning said what had happened. OFSTED male some enquiries; they didn’t conduct any actual school inspections nor any investigations. In fact they simply sent out surveys to schools (some staff and some pupils) so the results are full of impressions and second or third hand accounts. And of course the suggestions of what “sexual harassment” might be includes things such as sexist comments, unwanted compliments and “touching”. Very far from the more extreme events highlighted in the reporting. And the other key findings are that most of this “harassment” actually occurs outside schools particularly at parties with drugs and drink where there are no adult as well as social media.
So in fact most of the content of the report isn’t about “schools” as such but about school age children’s behaviours out of school. Clearly the ideologues at the BBC got hold of the original report tack of breathless condemnation of boys and when I came back to it later in the day we find lots of “girl’s stories” rather than a description of the report and its findings. Though as usual with a BBC report the last part still some actual facts and has the graph that shows a. the wide range of behaviour considered and b. the inconvenient truth that boys too experience the same behaviours often in not much less %s.
I am only sad I didn’t think to screen shot or otherwise preserve this morning’s version of this report because in it one would see the journey from relatively sober description of the report itself and its findings to an almost completely different report, barely referring to what Ofsted actually say. And the journey from “teenagers are all over the place especially out of school or adult supervision” to “boys are a big problem and need wholesale re education”.
