Our thanks to Nigel for this. He writes:
Now this case will have a lot of familiar features for Police and others more used to the reality of DV. Chaotic relationships with combinations of youth, drink, quick tempers and little stability. As Erin Pizzey pointed out decades ago in Prone to Violence with a lot of “mutual” abuse. And so I accept it is possible this woman did not plan to murder that night. But I ask you would there be such a line, “This is, on any view, a sad case. A young mother finds herself in the dock and her partner has died at her hands.”
It speaks volumes doesn’t? Could you see anyone in a trial attempting to present such a sympathetic version for a man? Lets try it, “This is, on any view, a sad case. A young father finds himself in the dock and his partner has died at his hands.” Were there ever to be such a line uttered in court Julie Bindel and her partner Harriet would orchestrate such a storm as would engulf the media. And anyway we all know men are toxic to their core.
One can’t help but think there was relief all round when there appeared faint marks around her neck in a photo unearthed after the first trial. After all he’s dead and she’s a tragic mother of two.
