Our thanks to Nigel for this. He writes:
While I wouldn’t normally give much attention to stories from showbiz, by its nature awash with strangely self-absorbed people hungry for attention, I was struck by this report from Australia. It captures the sense of betrayal of the actor by women who have posed as friendly, in this case one for years, while apparently harbouring resentments or worse plotting to gain some leverage. As so often it highlights the long gaps between alleged offences and actual reporting, again if there was a problem why not address it at the time or very soon after? And of course it highlights the “mud sticks” attitude of the wider society, the accusation is treated as proof by swathes of the public.
Mr. McLachlan reveals the mental toll taken by being identified as a pariah and abandoned by almost everyone. Discusses his suicidal thoughts and shows the squalid place that became a sort of refuge. The high suicide rate for men must reflect realities, like these, facing official and social “judgement” on all sorts of issues. The absolute absence of any empathy let alone sympathy from all but a loyal few (how appalling to imagine men without even such loyal friends).
And it shows so clearly the lie of “feminists” that somehow society condones men who behave badly. When even the accusation can call in such shunning and abrogation of all due process onto a popular figure, how much heavier the effects on an ordinary “Joe”? I was struck yet again by the praise for the “bravery”of the accusers from the Magistrate even though the judgement exonerated the actor! Would anyone think a man, accusing others of inappropriate touching years ago, having never addressed the issue directly and even pretended to be friendly, “brave”? Of course not.
