Our thanks to Nigel for this. He writes:
An interesting case. Really revealing the double standards at work in our criminal justice system. Consider the way in which the rape accusations were “believed” though these followed proof and admission that the accuser had fabricated the harassment case! Now would a man already found out in such a way have been believed about rape and then an even more fanciful kidnapping story? Seems unlikely.
Anyway eventually found out we find the usual excuse of some sort of “disorder” though in this case being mentally unstable didn’t get enough sympathy, though the judge did see fit to paint a picture of the hard working young woman working hard for her exams on the kitchen table, do we really think such a sympathetic story would form part of the judge’s comments had he sentenced a man for the list of lies and deceptions? Try and imagine it. No, switching the sexes soon shows that wouldn’t happen.
And then to the comments, some do indeed note the appalling nature of her crimes, but not a few suggest “he” somehow deserved the campaign or at least are amused at the story. Again imagining the sexes changed one can see how unlikely a woman would be assumed to have brought such a massive campaign on herself nor amuse readers.
A real “empathy gap” or sympathy gap. I suppose at least a prison sentence was delivered in the end.
