A woman who had drunk four times the legal drink drive limit has been given a suspended prison sentence.
Wigan magistrates heard how Leanne Cowell, aged 39, of Barrie Way, Hall i’th’ Wood, Bolton, was caught driving a Nissan Micra on Crompton Way, Bolton, on January 30. Tests showed she had 140mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal driving limit is 35mcg.
Cowell pleaded guilty to drink driving and was banned from the roads for three years and sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months during which she must undertake 150 hours of unpaid work.
Magistrates told Cowell: “You were incapable of being in proper control of your vehicle and you put yourself and other road users at risk of serious injury or death.
“You have no excuse at all for your actions.
“If you wish to drink to excess then the common sense rule would be not to drive any motor vehicle.” [J4MB emphasis. Did the magistrates really think it necessary to tell the woman this? If so, she should never be given her driving licence back.]
