Our thanks to Douglas for this:
Last year, the world-famous opera star Plácido Domingo celebrated his 50th year at the Metropolitan Opera, New York. Today (Wednesday 25th) he was due to start the title role in the Met’s Macbeth.
However, for the past few weeks, he has been accused of sexual misconduct. The accusations have been added to since the first was announced, some of them three decades old. Mr Domingo denies all the allegations.
Nevertheless, both the Philadelphia Orchestra and the San Francisco Opera, have cancelled his appearances. Staff at the Met have been making his life hard though management – to their credit in the prevailing ‘believe the female accuser’ culture – have been reluctant to join in the witch-hunt.
Yesterday, Plácido Domingo announced that he was retiring from the Met. and would not return. It is quite possible that the world has already had the last chance to hear the tenor’s voice in public.
